[Level 15, Light's Hope Chapel in Eastern Plaguelands]

Victorie stood quickly, scaring off the squirrel who had been watching her. She wiped her tears and took a deep breath. "Time to leave this place, I think," she said to the retreating squirrel. She hearthed back to the city and rode one of her beloved gryphons to Thelsamar, a goodly-sized dwarven settlement. "No plagued animals wandering about there," she muttered to herself. But in Thelsamar, she found her father ... she'd have taken an infected bear over her father any day! He took her for another of his scary motorcycle rides, racing over every bump and speeding past monsters and horrors of all shapes and sizes. Through wetlands and highlands they rode, no words spoken between them. Her only consolation was that her father did not have that strange, winged creature with him that provoked such strange feelings in her. When they entered a diseased land where every creature seemed plagued, Victorie closed her eyes tightly. She wondered for the hundredth time what sort of horrible world she'd been born into ... and what her purpose could possibly be.

On and on they went for many hours, and Victorie saw the evidence of plague whenever she dared to crack open her eyes. Eventually the trees no longer appeared diseased, and Victorie risked a better look. They were in a rather pretty forest, but the creatures were strange to her. Before she could gather her wits, she was plunged back into the plaguedlands, as she had come to think of them. Her father rode hard, resolve in every move he made. In time, they arrived at a small chapel ... around it the plagued animals wailed, but the chapel seemed to be a beacon of hope to her young eyes. She slunk off her dad's motorcycle while he was busy speaking to a man who'd recognized him and took shelter in the small chapel. "Surely people of the cloth would not kill others," she said to herself in reassurance.

Ah, the joy of exploration. My little Victorie has explored a great deal of Azeroth for a level 15 character. Right now, she has fully explored 12 regions! And she's gained quite a bit of experience off it as a result. Even though I have the Explorer title on my main character (I was so proud of myself when I got it at level 72!), I'm still learning new things about exploration and experience gains. Here's a summary of what I've learned so far:

  • Most, but not all, areas in a region grant experience when discovered.
  • The amount of experience you gain is related to the level of the region and the level of your character.
  • Most, but not all, areas in a region are listed in the corresponding exploration achievement.
  • You can get the achievement for exploring an entire region even when there are a few unlisted areas you haven't discovered -- finding these usually grants extra experience.
This last one is very interesting to me, as I'd like to get as much experience as possible in a region. I've looked and looked, but I can't find any definitive list of discoverable areas in a region. I'm still looking. I can't believe something like this isn't documented somewhere online.

As for experience gains, I want to get the most out of my discoveries. So my plan is to discover all of the lower level regions first, while the experience is still useful. So this evening I will run over Tirisfal Glades and Silverpine Forest, then I'll need to hit Durotar, Mulgore, and The Barrens.

Update: Victorie is in Tirisfal Glades now. So far I've discovered two areas not listed in the achievement: Ruins of Lordaeon (85 experience), which is just outside Undercity, and Terrace of Repose (85 experience), which is behind the Scarlet Monastery. 170 experience is a big deal when you're exploring for experience like Victorie.
