Patch 3.3 & the Roleplayer: How the New Patch Effects Roleplay PDF Print E-mail
Articles - Character Development

It's patch day! While I'm anxiously waiting for the servers to come back up, I thought I might outline how a few of the patch notes may affects roleplayers.

"The existing /welcome emote now greets/welcomes targets (character says “hello”), while the new /yw is for saying "you're welcome."

A "welcome" change! But it's going to take some time to remember to use /yw, admittedly.

"Meeting Stones: To use any Meeting Stone, it is only required that the character’s minimum level be 15. There is no maximum character level requirement for any Meeting Stone."

You know what this means? If we're roleplaying as a group, we can use a nearby meeting stone to gather everyone together!

"Costumes: Various costumes from holidays, items, and quests that previously were cancelled by getting on a mount will now cause an error message when the player attempts to mount instead of cancelling the costume."

Now we can mount up without fear of losing our fun look!

"Noggenfogger Elixir: Players shrunk while under the effects of this item will now be able to mount."

Hooray! This means those of us who like to roleplay as "small" for one reason or another may now remain small for much longer. I, for one, am delighted to see this. It was always so frustrating to have to dismiss my buff when I needed to mount, especially when it took so many drinks to get!

"Haris Pilton now sells a new 24-slot bag! She has stubbornly decided to remain in Shattrath City, so those interested should seek her out there."

Good news for roleplayers with plenty of gold and too many outfits!

"Hatchlings: Leaping, Darting, Razormaw, and Ravasaur Hatchlings no longer drop from their associated rare creatures. Instead, there are now rare nests that spawn which contain these hatchlings. For example, the Leaping Hatchling can now be found in Takk’s Nest rather than as a drop from Takk the Leaper."

Rejoice, all yet pet collectors! This should make getting these rare pets easier, which also means they'll be available for less gold on the auction house if you prefer to buy it outright.

"Bind-on-Account Items: Players can now mail Bind-on-Account items to characters on the same account and realm regardless of faction. Please note this only applies to Bind-on-Account items. Other items or gold cannot be sent via mail to characters on the same realm and account if they are from differing factions."

About time!

And some class-specific changes:

Hunters: "Call Stabled Pet: Cooldown reduced from 30 minutes to 5 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas."

Useful if you have pets you use for roleplay and you want to switch them quicker.

Mages: "Glyph of Eternal Water: This glyph allows for a summoned Water Elemental to last indefinitely, but it can no longer cast Freeze."

Mages finally get a permanent familiar! Now if only we had that fire element for us fire mages.

Creating Your WoW Roleplay Character Sheet PDF Print E-mail

I stumbled across my roleplay obsession in a roundabout way. Rather than being a longtime fan of pen-and-paper roleplaying games, or enjoying in-person roleplay at my local renaissance festival, I simply joined a roleplaying realm in World of Warcraft (WoW). Why? On the particular day that I decided to give the WoW trial a go, a roleplaying realm just sounded more fun than a normal one. Little did I know what door I was opening when I joined Moon Guard that wintry evening. So it should come as no surprise that I knew very little about developing characters, and it wasn't until nearly a year later that I learned about the roleplay benefits of a "character sheet."

A character sheet is a description of your roleplay character, from the basic "facts" (name, gender, hair color) to complex personality traits and personal history (how they came to be the way they are today). Some folks create a character sheet before they ever roleplay a character, others allow a character to evolve organically through roleplay and later write down the details. Either way, it can enrich your experience because it gives you a solid base to branch out, helps you remember important, character-defining details, and may even fill in some significant blanks in your character's personality that you just hadn't considered.

WoW Character Roleplay Challenge: The Dragon Slayer PDF Print E-mail

I love to roleplay my characters in World of Warcraft. And I also love to level my characters and really enjoy the gameplay. But often these two loves conflict with one another. For example, my fire-ballin' mage Emeralde on Moon Guard absolutely abhors the killing of innocent critters -- she's well known for reprimanding others who slaughter bunnies and fawns for sport. So when the new statistics and achievement system was introduced with Wrath of the Lich King in November 2008, I was appalled to learn that Emeralde had killed hundreds upon hundreds of critters! How could this have happened, I wondered? Then I realized that her arcane explosion must have caught some critters in its field unintentionally. Well, not just some, but a LOT of critters. I'd never even noticed I was a mice murderer until I saw the cold, hard numbers. So Emeralde has been forced to embrace her critter killings as a professional necessity, but to be honest, I really miss this little quirk of hers.

This got me to thinking ... could I faithfully roleplay a character's quirk from the start without any inadvertent mistakes, and still achieve max level? I think I can ... and I even have an idea. My character Emeralde is currently with child in her long-running roleplay relationship with Lord Valherst. The couple think she is pregnant with a boy, but recent complications with her progress (too fast!) and her pet whelpling (behaving oddly and viciously attacking Emeralde) have inspired me to introduce a surprise ... TWINS! One of these will be a boy they will name Victore and train as a mighty warrior befitting his heritage as the son of a strong paladin and gifted mage. But Emeralde's unique condition hides the fact that she has another child, lurking in her womb and reluctant to be born. This unexpected child will be a girl they will name Victorie, and she will rebel and become vindictive. Almost from birth, Victorie will refuse to obey her parents or anyone else for that matter, will run away at an early age in anger and confusion, and absolutely refuse to harm another living creature. In her late teens, Victorie will encounter a whelpling in Redridge Mountains and crack, unleashing years of anger, confusion, and hatred upon the creature. From that point on, she will pour all of her rage into killing dragons, yet still stubbornly refuse to kill any other creature. And, over the course of her character's lifetime, I will explore her hatred for dragonkin through roleplay.
